"The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and The State" by Friedrich Engels (Pt. 2)
Red Menace
The History of the State
The state must play an essential role in socialist revolution, construction, consolidation and defense. It is only by eradicating the underlying material basis of the state that one could ever hope to get rid of it. This analysis stands in stark contrast to idealist liberal conceptions of the state as either a Hobbesian Leviathan protecting citizens from nasty, brutish and short lives on offer from a pure state of nature. Lenin seized on Ingles's idea regarding the state as inherently an instrument of class domination for his vision of a socialist state.
