39 members of the heavens gate cult committed mass ritual suicide on March 19th and 20th, 1997. The point of this mass suicide was to hitch a ride on a spacecraft flying in tandem with the Hale Bop Comet that was passing by Earth. Soon after the bodies were found, it was discovered that this cult had laid out their entire belief structure on a website,. They were dubbed the first internet cult.
