The Trial of Thomas Massey

Thomas Massey was found guilty of killing Joseph Kahawa Why in January 1932. He and three others were sentenced to ten years hard labor but the sentence was reduced after pressure from Hawaii's territorial governor Lawrence Judd. The case captivated the nation and tarnished Hawaii's peaceful tourist friendly image Many native Hawaiians meanwhile felt that their people had been unfairly disparaged. In 1935 Samuel Wilder King, a Hawaiian-born delegate to Congress introduced a bill proposing Hawaii become America's next state. But quickly died when it became known as 'Hawaiian apartheid'
