What Is the Problem With the Majority?
Hockfield was struck by the democratic nature of american society. He realised that it gave the majority an enormous power, if it chose to use it in certain ways. His worry is about the materialistic people who have a tendency towards mediocrity. What he doesn't do so much, and you think he might have said a bit more about this, i'm not sure whether he talks about lynching but i think what he worries About is the bottom up imposition of mass conformity on small minorities.
