Learning to Read in Primary School

As soon as children start school the first big competition is learning to read. 12% of those children go on to fail to get expected in reading at the end of key stage one. Children have are drilled into learning to read made-up words and are told it doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense if it doesn’t make sense it will be a made-up word so we've got this phonic screener. We're not teaching them a new word here we're just teaching them that that is written down like that, he says.
