Functional Programming in State

There's got to be something in there that is not being surfaced. It's in small talk experts' brains somewhere but they don't know how to say it. Most functional languages specify implicit sequencing and hence they face many of the same issues mentioned above. There are also concurrent versions of many functional languages and the fact that state is generally avoided can give benefits in this area.
