He saw it as the right and the responsibility of each person to think for themselves. He's iconoclastic in that way of saying, wait, just because we've always said divorce was illegal or only allowable in cases of adultery, no, that's not necessarily the right way to go forward. And I think your word reason or intellect is really valuable because he saw religion is both very spiritual, but also not para or irrational.
