The maps are a reminder of how powerful our historical legacy is, even when we're not always aware that that is what's operating around us. If you look at who has very low rates of upward mobility in the South and areas with a high rate of slavery in the past, it's actually white Americans who live in those areas who have the lowest rates of upward Mobility. And so what that shows is some of these things play out in ways that are non-obvious and end up having pernicious effects throughout society, not just for one subgroup.
