The Limitations of Royal Clothing
While on trial, it was kind of this mind game that some of these royals would play where they would be very decked out. Catherine Howard, 5th wife of Henry VIII, was only allowed 6 sets of clothing and wasn't allowed to wear any gems, pearls, or cloths of gold, silver, or tissue. At her actual execution, Mary Queen of Scots famously wore an all black satin dress, embroidered with black velvet, and set with black acorn buttons of jet,. trimmed with pearl, and black shoes. The dress had a train, and so she had her manservant, Melvin, carry her train as a mark of her royal status.
