I was thinking about the idea of this evening being on not being terrified of what you hear. I don't know quite what point in history, but we can pinpoint this between us, that having anything that appears to come outside of the self becomes fearful. As a writer, you cannot be a writer unless you're prepared to have multiple voices speaking to you all of the time. We concentrate endlessly on the destructive side of it, but we don't often think anymore with any ease or any confidence that we might hear things outside of theSelf as clear voices that are telling us something which is also benign and not necessarily destructive.
