The Westray Coal Mine Explosion

26 men died in an explosion at the west ray coal mine on May 15, 1993. It was the worst mining disaster in canada since 19 58 when 75 men died in a series of collapses at a coal mine in springhill, nova scotia. The owners promised to use the latest technology to make sure it was the safest operation ever seen in the province. A miner relayed a litany of safety violations to provincial inspectors but the labor department failed to take action. Families fear that no one will ever be held accountable for the tragedy which left 200 people out of work.
