Urban Cancer in the Bronx
The south bronx was a particularly nasty example of urban decay, but by the early 19 seventies, it was not unique in american cities. A letter to the editor of the times responded to the completed series under the headline, urban cancer. It read, in part, many people will regard the time series on the south bronc as a horror story to be quickly put out of their minds if they don't happen to live there or anywhere near it. But this social cancer is spreading. Unless unchecked, rather, unless checked, it can destroy not just the rest of the bronx, but the city itself. Some social therapist would get rid of the afflicted area by radical surgery.
