The ABC Conjecture

The ABC conjecture was originally proposed in the mid 1980s. It suggests that if A and B are large powers of prime numbers, then C isn't usually divisible by large powers of primes. In 2012, Shinichi Mocha Zuki at Kyoto University in Japan produced a proof he claimed showed it was true. But this proof was 500 pages long and introduced a completely new area of mathematics called into universal type mula theory. Many mathematicians said it was just written in an impenetrable style and have been struggling to understand the underlying ideas ever since.
