Juan Sebastian Elcano

Juan Sebastian Elcano was a bass pilot in the Armada de Maluca. He took part in the Easter mutiny, being one of the forty men condemned to death. To escape creditors he headed to Zavil where he attended the House of Trade School of Navigation. In 1519 he applied to be a pilot in the fleet and helped recruit other bass sailors into the fleet. It is here that he is often identified as the person running the expedition,. perhaps not in name, but in fact.
