CHAPTER

Copernicus and the New Star

In 1572, Copernicus observed a new star. The celestial realm was supposed to be unchanging. So citing this new star goes against that foundational Aristotelian axiom. Tiko measures this new star using a variety of non-telescopic instruments. He is able to determine that the star is superalunary and above the moon. It's significant for Tiko himself, because he cites this as a kind of epiphany moment where he decides to dedicate his life to astronomy.
