Is the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis a Good Idea?
patrion: The modern evolutionary synthesis came about at a time when we didn't have a really good understanding of the genetic basis of, you know, discreet versus continuous traits. Some scientists take camp's position, but others say that in some cases, plasticity can allow jenes to be followers in evolution. Plasticity first allows organisms to adjust to condition; then genetic changes come in later. We're now living in an omic time period, and we can examine more mechanistically how genetic variation is manifested. But i don't feel comfortable advocating for an extended so a chemists saying he thinks the modern synthesis is big enough to accommodate traits like plasticity.
