In 2014, the federal government provided $140 billion of preferential tax treatment by allowing homeowners to take a tax deduction for mortgage interest and property taxes. Higher income can afford bigger houses as the developers are building because they get a tax break on their mortgage interest. A primary way, preferred way is the Housing Choice Voucher program. The US government spends $18 billion a year on that in 2014.
