Reading and Writing - A Way of Self Discovery
Augustine's sense of the self as a unique story unfolding in time was a result of his reflection the experience of reading. Bryan stock says, is only evident a millennium later, in the figure of the fourteenth century poet and scholar francesco petrarch. Reading and writing, for augus o are a means of self discovery. For petrarch, there are means of self invention, a technology of the self. As michel fuco says, petrarch is a much more self conscious seeker after written knowledge and texts and ancient thought.
