The author started writing when he was about 10 years old. He says his family had been torn apart almost violently by his mother's persistent alcoholism. His editor wanted him to have something that unified everything in the book, so he wrote an essay. But it felt like adding a lead weight to the rest of the book and that it needed more equality of narration.
