The permanence comes from this non-linearity, right? They're fading, but they're also generating new gravitational waves. So it's sort of like it leaves a permanent echo wherever it goes. And so that suggests the gravitational radiation is fundamentally different from other kinds of radiation. It deposits some of that in space as it goes along.
