President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping of China are meeting for the first time since Obama became president. It's considered a very important step in trying to, as American officials put it, build a floor in a relationship that has been deteriorating rapidly over the last couple of years. This kind of bonomy masks a tremendous rift between America and China on trade, on technology, on Taiwan and more. There's a lot there sorting out competition, avoiding conflict, fostering cooperation.
