Gladys Knight had attempted to get them an audition with Barry Gordy, the company's CEO and founder. But Gordy had been reluctant to sign them because he did not want to sign no kid act again. So a woman named Suzanne DePasse convinced him to give the Jackson 5 a shot. And when they came out and started singing and dancing, my God, everybody at Motown, they said, oh my God, just to watch them perform, it was like unreal. It was like a nice one-door-to-world.
