i think the story that america likes to tell about itself is rooted in a contract theory of society. And if we can show that the ag ment was premised on false commitments, or what have you, from the beginning, then we can undo the entire thing. i think rabi sax helped at least kind of introduce into the conversation this idea of covenant - which yo spoke about often. But the way that i think about it is that covenant is a really helpful way to think about social foundings for nations like most of us, that are not founded in virtue.
