The Overwhelming Power of the Central State

When traveling around Russia, I was struck by the fact that there was relative little variance in accents and architectural styles. If you were to go back 80 years or so, 100 years in Britain, you'd have seen even greater diversity in these localities. So because of this overwhelming power of the state and weakness of what we would call nowadays civil society, but it's actually like local people's local dwellers. They could be technically the same as Russians or they could be very different.
