The Net Eruption of the Upper Volcano

It's a remarkable net eruption. We're still not yet really understanding what drove that enormous event. But i think the clues we have are that there was a lot of magma present in the upper volcano that was very full of gas, and it was under pressure. And if the gases can't escape from the magma, then the pressure continues to build.
