The biblical authors take language associated with that day and use it to describe moments within our experience of history where evil doesn't get the final word or justice does happen. If you live in Portland looking out towards Mount Hood, all those foothills kind of merge together and they become this kind of indistinguishable greenish terrain leading up to the mountain.
