In the last 30 years of AI development there have been three major turning points. The first was deep blue, an AI that could play something complicated like chess better than even the best human. The second one was AlphaGo, which didn't tell scientists how to play Go by trial and error. And now Chatbot is a more exploratory system trying to see if it can generate its own convincing language over time.
AI has the potential to impact our society in dramatic ways, but researchers can’t explain precisely how it works or how it might evolve. Will they ever understand it?
