Vivaldi, The Four Seasons
Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast
Vivaldi's Welcome
The second movement takes this gloomy mood even further, and honestly, I have to empathize with Vivaldi here as there's no season I look forward to less than summer. If I could describe how I feel in the summer, especially on those really hot, humid days, it might be this second movement. This is perhaps the most integrated of all the seasons, where a story carries all the way through the three movements. And over the top of this is not a calm and gentle line for the shepherd, but instead our protagonist seems to barely be able to move,. Long notes that suggest an unsettled sleep, interrupted by tremors of fear and of the storms to come. Welcome.
