The Early Years of Electoral Politics in Japan
In 1892, Hatoyama Kazuo was nominated as an independent for Tokyo's 9th District. He would keep up a winning record from this point onward, remaining in the diet from 1892 until his death. In the first ten years of electoral politics in Japan, there were six general elections. The great historian Donald Keene described it as probably the most corrupt in Japanese history.
