Social Movements and the Contribution That They Make to Democracy and Moral Inquiry
A social movement is a sustained and organized endeavor in what I call borrowing from social theory, extra institutional contentious politics. Usually of some marginalized or excluded group but also sometimes of a project in the world that's not taken seriously. The goal is to change relevant institutions policies and practices. And it's really that last sentence, that last phrase that helps us understand why it's genuinely politics even though it is often not taking place within political institutions.
