The Relationship Between Indigenous Communities and the Environment
In the West, it's become clear that there's enormous knowledge that was accumulated in the Indigenous communities and how to manage landscapes for fire. This is the opposite of what the U.S. did through the 20th century,. which was to extinguish fire or limit it. It's been so clear, even from satellite data, you see that when a region is occupied by an indigenous community, the amount of deforestation is less.
