There is accumulating genetic evidence from the analysis of Neanderthal genomes that there was gene flow between modern humans and Neanderthals around 200,000 years ago. We can sort of match pieces of DNA in people living today to the Neanderthal genome. And we see that in everyone who has ancestry outside of Africa today, there is about 2% the genomes of everyone outside of AfricaToday is from Neanderthals.
