What's Wrong With the Crackpot A?
There's a comfort in being able to show your work, and there's a sense of accountability in a shared language that comes from footnotes. We know there is such a thing as brilliance, but it can be so easily corrupted, too. And i think there's a kind of safety, albeit a levelling down, when we reward people simply for publishing rather than measuring the existential impact of a paper on readers.
