There's a strong assumption that human cognition is a computational process at its root. The argument for the emergence of machine consciousness is that our brains are a matter that came together and suddenly consciousness popped into existence. I actually argue in my book that this is really ultimately a faith that these processes are at their root computational. It's a faith with actually rather weak evidence for it.
