The Rise and Fall of Walter Raleigh

In 1584, Walter Raleigh obtained a royal charter allowing him to explore and colonise on behalf of the English Crown. He sent two ships to North America in order to establish the first English colonies from which to obtain goods or spread Protestantism. The colony was called Roanoke, and the island is now known as Roanoke Island. However, attempts to revisit the colony were put on hold as the situation between England and Spain escalated making seafaring highly volatile. So he never visited the colony with over 100 settlers left to find their fortune.
