Many less educated people believed this was all a trick. Many peasants and poor workers viewed the empire as the ultimate oversight over their local officials, who were often not well liked. A minority of the subjects of the empre were happy to see it fall. Most people within the empire greeted the news with some combination of sadness and horror, if they cared at all.
