The Three Worlds Theory
The stories of earthworks often emphasize what Alan calls the three worlds theory. The Choctaw novelist Leanne Howe has noted that these realms can overlap, forming spiritual ecotones. Sites where mounds appeared were often ecotones too, they sat upon the edge of wetlands as if perched alongside the lower world. They rose toward the sky, aligned precisely to match the turns of the upper world.
