The Assyrian Empire in Mesopotamia
Mataani, a kingdom comprised of Huryan speakers, ruled by a line of kings with Indo-Aryan names. Much of Mataani's former territory fell under the rule of Ashur. The term Assyrian came to simply mean anyone living within a territory that acknowledged God Ashur as its overlord. For the next century, Assyria slowly but surely chipped away at its Anatolian neighbor to the northwest.
