The Evolution of Monotremes in South America

Patago rinkus pascualae is the oldest known monotrem in South America. It's probably about 10 million years later than our best estimate of their age. This suggests they were more widespread than we thought by the end of the mesozoic. They also point out that a handful of features of other early monotremes are similar to modern platypuses.
