The History of Tariffs in the United States

Tariffs are a way to regulate trade and were a major source of revenue for the United States government in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The tariff law that was at work in Nixon versus Heddon was passed in 1883, following broad calls for tariff reform. After the 1880 presidential election, Republicans controlled both houses of Congress and Republican James Garfield had been elected president.
