Anne said she would go and smooth things over with marilla. Matthew was so ashamed he fled to the remotest corner of the horse pasture. After milking, anne walked down the lane looking triumphant. But half way down her dejection vanished as if by enchantment. Marilla beheld the change disapprovingly. She had been wondering what under the canopy she should do if anne did not give in.
