Foreign Minister Penny Wong seems slightly wrong-footed in the rollout of Australia's position to not recognising Israel's capital as West Jerusalem. Labor was always going to enact this policy, but had not given it early priority and her department altered its website ahead of government processes. She forgot to give Israel any forewarning. Palestinian groups welcome the change saying Australia must not preempt the final status of Jerusalem in the peace process. But Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid condemned the way the situation was handled.
