Tunisia's President Kaya Sayed is a constitutional law professor who won the presidency by landslide in 2019. He exercised emergency powers to sack the Prime Minister closed the National Assembly and suspend the Constitution, essentially paving the way to rule by decree. Nadia Mazzukki: We need to be very, very careful when we call any political actor in Tunisia a secularist or an Islamist because these words are often abused and confused far more than they clarify.
