Piracy and banditry provided a significant and consistent supply of slaves, though this varied according to the era and the region. In certain areas, piracy was practically a national specialty,. described by Thucydides as the old fashioned way of life. However, slave traders were viewed with much distaste, and it was seen as one of the most shameful occupations.
