I'd been feeling strange about work ever since I started on the killing floor and had finally asked to be moved to positions. There was another man who worked the floor bleeding the animals whose name was Tom Hahn but he never really spoke to me. He leaned close, gripped my shoulder and said in perfect English: 'You cannot stop slaughter by closing the door' The next day I was being moved to butchering the carcasses. Knowing that these were the last animals I'd need to kill made each pull of the trigger harder not easier.
