The idea of cosmic loneliness implies that maybe the great filters behind us so it's actually good news in that sense. Joseph Schlowski is a good example here who was an early optimist about intelligence in the universe and then later changed his mind given the lack of evidence. If most of the galaxy is kind of barren and sterile then we have the potential for a humongous impact, says David Wheeler.
