The Consequences of IMF Structural Adjustment Programs

During the 1980s and 1990s, IMF structural adjustment programs cut public sector wages and employment while rolling back labor rights. This ensures a steady flow of disposable gadgets and fast fashion to affluent northern consumers, but at extraordinary cost to human lives and ecosystems in the south end quote. In Mexico, for instance, during structural adjustment programs, income per adult declined from 31,000 in 1981 to 23,000 in 1986 and it still hasn't recovered.
