Gender is a feature of languages that have lasted for 5,000 years. It helps to tie adjectives and noun together reducing the need for word order. In Swahili you can put all of your marking on the verb in addition to its eight classes. This gives you a little freedom of word order there because most of the time you will know who's doing what to whom due to the different classes.
