In 1871, Evans Day took out a general accident policy with the Travelers Insurance Company. Three weeks later he dumped his old clothes on the beach and disappeared into the wilderness of Vermont in order to lie low. When nobody was found in the sea, however, the insurance company got suspicious and further investigated Evans's movements around the days of his supposed drowning. This uncovered a string of lies and frauds that led the company to rule the whole affair of fraud and deny the insurance claim.
