The athenians were able to win the battle of marathon based on the fact that their troops held a defensive advantage for so long. With this choke point provided by the gap at thermopylae, the greeks reasoned that they could station a small number of hoplights there and hold off a much larger force. The effective ieness of the persian numbers would be hugely undermined if they could only fight at a choke point. And so the plan was settled.
